Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
My neighbor is 40 years old. She was diagnosed with dengue fever last week. Now, I am afraid I will get dengue fever. I would like to know what the common symptoms are. How soon after being bitten by an infected mosquito do symptoms typically appear? What are the recommended treatment options for dengue fever? What preventive measures can individuals take to reduce their risk of contracting dengue fever? What are the potential complications due to dengue? Please help.
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I read your query and understand your concern.
Dengue fever is caused by any one of four types of dengue viruses. You can not get dengue fever from being around an infected person. Instead, dengue fever is spread through mosquito bites. The two types of mosquitoes that most often spread the dengue viruses are common both in and around human lodging. The dengue virus is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female mosquitoes, primarily the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
Prevention:
There is no widely available dengue vaccine to prevent dengue infection. The best way to prevent dengue is to protect yourself from mosquito bites by using insect repellents and wearing loose-fitting, long-sleeved shirts and pants.
Confirmation by blood test: Dengue profile.
CBC (complete blood count) for platelet count. If it is less, I suggest treatment with fluid replacement, and if it is very low, blood transfusion and platelet substitute might be required, all undercover with a broad-spectrum antibiotic. Try to bring platelets up to normal range to avoid bleeding complications.
I hope that you get your answer.
Please let me know if you need any help.
Thank you.
