What triggers bleeding post-contraceptive injection?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 25 years old, and I took the contraceptive injection this year. However, I have been experiencing bleeding for the past four months. I am afraid because I have not gone through this before. What is the solution to this problem?

Answered by Dr. Pandian. P

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It might be due to urinary tract infection or pelvic inflammatory disease. I suggest you take the coagulation agents to stop bleeding (consult a specialist doctor, talk with him or her, and take medications with their consent) and undergo the following tests:

  1. Urine culture test.
  2. Vaginal test for microbiology.
  3. Blood test to know the hemoglobin levels.
  4. PT or INR (prothrombin time or international normalized ratio) and coagulation tests.
  5. Abdominal and pelvic ultrasounds.
