Can a consistent sleep schedule, reduced caffeine intake, limited screen time, and regular aerobic exercise help with depression and anxiety?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am feeling overwhelmed, I guess. I have been having trouble sleeping, and despite my efforts to get enough rest, my mind keeps racing. When I wake up, everything just floods my thoughts. I am going through a lot of emotional ups and downs, especially concerning family issues and love. My family is not supportive, and recently, my love is getting married, which has given me a troubling perspective on love. I find it hard to concentrate on anything. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Firstly, I would like to emphasize that there are situations and actions of others that we cannot always control, but what truly matters is how we handle them. I recommend conducting a self-assessment for clinical depression and anxiety disorders. You can use self-rating tests like Zung's self-rating depression scale and Zung's self-rating anxiety scale, which are readily available online. If the results indicate moderate to severe depression or an anxiety disorder, it is advisable to consult with a psychiatrist in person for a comprehensive evaluation and treatment plan. Here are some simple steps that may be helpful:

  1. Maintain a regular sleep schedule, both for going to bed and waking up.

  2. Avoid consuming caffeinated drinks at least eight hours before bedtime.

  3. Refrain from consuming refined sugars and a high-protein diet in the evening.

  4. Minimize the use of electronic devices like television, mobile phones, and laptops at least half an hour before bedtime. Engage in relaxing activities, such as taking a shower, instead.

  5. Use your bed exclusively for sleeping; avoid eating or watching television in bed.

  6. Avoid daytime naps.

  7. Incorporate relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises, into your daily routine to help you relax and focus.

  8. Maintain a journal where you can freely jot down your thoughts without censorship, and never revisit them.

  9. Engage in aerobic exercises for at least half an hour in the morning, as it can be beneficial.

  10. Ensure you follow a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and omega fatty acids.

Remember every problem has a solution you just need to try solving it and help is just a step away. Feel free to ask if you have any further queries.

Thank you.
