Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 39-year-old wife was diagnosed with major depressive disorder a few months back and has been taking anti-depressants. But she feels tired and sleepy after taking them. She has tried therapy and other medications, but nothing seems to be making a significant difference. I have heard about transcranial magnetic stimulation(TMS) as a potential treatment for depression. Could TMS be an option for her? How does it work, and what are the potential benefits and risks? Kindly help her live a peaceful life.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

I can understand your problem regarding the situation of your wife. You have not mentioned the details of the medications which your wife has taken. Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) is used for the treatment of resistant depression and is an effective therapy. There is no specific mechanism but it is hypothesized that TMS works by directly stimulating brain neurons and they release neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine which helps in managing depression. TMS is safe there is no specific side effect. But still, it is not the first choice for depression until it is diagnosed as resistant depression.

I hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards.
