What can be done for itchiness in breast below nipple?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 25-year-old married woman. I have major itching in both my breasts. It started off on the left side, but now even on the right side, it has started to itch. I am not able to keep myself from scratching, and the entire part below my left nipple is bruised now. There is no redness. The breast felt heavy initially. The itchy sensation in the breast is below the nipple area and spreads down. I had a similar itching couple of years back but it disappeared on its own. I am shy to see a dermatologist in the clinic. Please help me with a basic diagnosis and medication.

Thanks.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Perhaps you have either a fungal infection or it could be a sort of dermatitis. Treatment for both these conditions is entirely different. Therefore, I request you to kindly upload a few images of the affected areas so that I can confirm and guide you better. Looking forward to your response in order to help you.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

I have reviewed the attached image (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). You seem to have eczematous dermatitis. I suggest you use a moisturizer regularly. Additionally, consider applying a moderately potent topical steroid cream such as Flutivate cream (Fluticasone) or Momate cream (Miconazole) twice daily. I also suggest you take an oral antihistamine like the tablet Teczine (Levocetirizine) 5 mg once every evening for symptomatic relief from itching. Consult your specialist doctor, discuss with them, and take the medicines with their consent.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for the reply.

I have similar itching on my left breast in the areola region. I have attached the pictures. I am 30 weeks pregnant currently, and my gynecologist asked me not to use the ointment you prescribed. Please let me know what to use.

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You can safely use Flutivate (Fluticasone propionate) cream on the areola for a week or 10 days. No issues, it is safe in pregnancy.

I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
