Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was told I was prediabetic about a year ago during a hospital visit. My HbA1c level was 5.3 %. I have tried to lose weight on my own by changing my diet, and at first, I was doing well with reducing calories and walking. Then at around the three-week mark, I fell off the wagon when I only saw one to two pound weight loss. I think the inconsistency is doing more harm to my body than anything. Is it a good idea to see a specialist to test and confirm for diabetes and ask about medications or options to help me with hunger and cravings?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

You are absolutely right. Losing weight is a gradual, step wise process, and getting help is often needed. Crash diets often fail because it is hard to stick to them. And even in the most successful diet programs, you hit a plateau. It is because of a concept called 'Fat Mass Setpoint.' A qualified doctor with experience in weight loss management can help you. There are several medical options available depending on where you live in this world. More recently, a medicine called tablet Semaglutide has been very successful. There are other options as well, depending on your particular situation. I suggest you, please take these tests for diabetes: HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin), fasting blood glucose level, or OGTT (oral glucose tolerance test).

Hope this helps.
