What is the treatment for my diabetes and a fatty liver?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I was diagnosed with diabetes one year ago, and my HbA1c is 6.5%. I also have grade 1 to grade 2 fatty liver disease. I have been taking Glycomet SR 500 mg once daily for the last four months. Is it the best treatment for me?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understood your concern.

Your HbA1c (glycated hemoglobin) is fairly well controlled, especially since you were diagnosed relatively recently. Metformin, the medication you are taking, helps decrease insulin resistance and is considered one of the most effective medications for diabetes management.

The fatty liver disease you mentioned is commonly associated with insulin resistance, and at this stage, it may still be reversible if appropriate lifestyle changes are made. The most effective approach for managing all these issues currently is lifestyle modification, as follows:

  • Focus on gradual weight loss.

  • Eating a balanced diet rich in vegetables.

  • Exercising regularly.

  • Walking at least 8,000 steps a day.

  • Consuming adequate protein.

  • Maintaining proper sleep of at least six to seven hours daily.

  • Introducing yoga or meditation into your routine may also help.

  • Avoid alcohol completely if you consume it.

If you are able to follow these measures consistently, your currently well-controlled HbA1c may improve even further. Bringing it closer to 6% over the next six months through lifestyle modification can significantly reduce the likelihood of future complications. I would also advise you to get your lipid profile checked.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer. For further queries, you can consult me at iCliniq.

Thank you.
