My bedridden mother suffers from loose motion for the past 24 hours. How to treat her?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am taking care of my bedridden mother. She has loose motion for the past 24 hours on average, every hour. Her back has become red due to frequent cleaning. What to do?

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. It seems that she is developing bedsores. Please mention the duration of her lying position in bed. To prevent the development of bedsores, turn her position frequently. You can place a pillow under the back for support. Clean the area gently and keep it dry by applying talcum powder. Redness on the butt can occur due to bed sores or pressure sores. You can try to use a water bed for her. It helps to distribute pressure, and it avoids pressing at one point.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

I have two issues. How to stop her loose motion coming for once an hour? The redness is present on her anus, and it is not over her butt. I keep it dry by putting on a dry pad after applying skin protection lotion. The nearby doctor is on holiday today, and so I am using this platform. She has mild pain with moaning.

Before six hours, I gave Tylenol. What to do? She has a blood pressure of 80/57 mmHg, a heart rate of 58 beats per minute, an oxygen level of 97 percent, and a temperature of 96 degrees.

Please help.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The redness around the anus is due to frequent loose stools. Try to keep the area dry and wipe it gently. Her blood pressure is in the lower range. Keep her hydrated by giving lots of water. You can give an oral rehydration solution to her. Mix it with the water as instructed on the packet. Continue giving fluids to her. You can give one liter of water for about two to three hours. Give her slowly.

Binge drinking can cause vomiting. If oral rehydration solution is not available, you can mix table salt with water to rehydrate her. You can also give Lactobacilli capsules to her. She can take two to three sachets for 24 hours. Try to keep her hydrated as much as possible. She can have moaning due to weakness and loss of electrolytes in stools. Keeping herself hydrated helps her a lot.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
