Patient's Query

Hello,

My wife is 34 years old, breastfeeding, and has had diarrhea since morning. What medications can she take to cure diarrhea that should not harm the baby, who is six months old?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I understand your concern. Your wife can take Imodium every eight hours, together with a tablet of Metronidazole. This will stop diarrhea, but she needs to hydrate herself well to compensate for the lost body fluids caused by diarrhea. In addition, dehydration could affect the amount of milk her breasts produce, so she needs to drink at least eight cups of water, milk, and juices daily.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

Will these medicines have any side effects on the baby? Because right now baby is dependent on breastfeeding.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

No, these medications will not affect the baby as only less than 1 % will be secreted in breast milk, which will not harm the baby.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for recommending the medications. She is feeling better now. Could you please tell me for how long she should continue these medications?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

She can continue these medications for five days.

I hope this has helped you. Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
