Direct Bilirubin

Bilirubin is a chemical produced by the liver that is responsible for breaking down hemoglobin. The body converts bilirubin into a form that can be excreted and this form of bilirubin is known as direct bilirubin. The small intestine receives this bilirubin as it leaves the liver. A small fraction of bilirubin enters the kidneys and is eliminated through urine.
