Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife is having pain in collar bone and ribs. Her vitamin D was low and ESR is high. She was given tablets as enclosed and had done an MRI scan for the right lower back pain. Our doctor prescribed Alsody for six months, now she is having muscle pain in thighs. I understand other capsules prescribed by our doctor where vitamin supplements. Why Prolong is given for my wife? Why it is not required now (15 days dosage is left still)? Why Alsody capsules were prescribed? Is this 100 % safe and can be taken for six months right with no side effects apart from what you had sent in previous mail? Will Alsody upset my wife's period and cause any other health problem in the future?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I will answer your each questions. Prolong is a anti-inflammatory medication. Now your wife's CRP value is less than 5 which is normal. Earlier, it must be prescribed to bring down the inflammatory markers. Since they are normalized now, no further medication is required for it.Alsody is alpha lipoic acid it is an antioxidant used for generalized well being and the drug is not absolute essential for any disease treatment. She can take them if she subjectively feels better on taking them. I personally do not prescribe it to my patients. Alsody is 100 % safe. Excess of anything and everything is bad for health be it a health supplement or water or sunshine. She can get side effects even with one dose or might not have any adverse effect even after six months. Nausea and rashes are the most common side effects while other common adverse effects have been mentioned in my previous answer. There can be new adverse effects also with any drug which have previously not been documented but their chances as less compared to the one already known. Alsody does not affect the menstrual cycle and chances of it affected menstrual cycle are less but future health problems cannot be predicted. I hope this helps.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

What is there in the MRI report? Our doctor told that there is a gap in L4-L5, for future precaution he had prescribed Alsody and told not to lift weights. Whether this bulge in the gap gets cured or is it permanent? What precaution to be taken?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I am sorry to disappoint you but the disc prolapse is a permanent pathology. It can progress to diffuse disc bulge along with symptoms due to neurological compression or the edema subsides and disc bulge remains mild. The indentation on the left side of nerves will subside. Course of the disease cannot be predicted. She should refrain from lifting heavy weights especially from the ground level. She should start spine extension exercises and perform it on a regular basis and should also use sleep on a hard mattress rather than a soft one. Mild disc prolapse is ubiquitous and it is considered pathological in a middle-age female only if the symptoms can be directly attributed to the disc prolapse. At times it can be an incidental finding but carrying out preventive measures is a good thing. It neither costs nor hurts. Your wife is complaining of backache with low Vitamin D and has mild disc prolapse with no history of radiation of pain. So the disc prolapse issue was not raised and Vitamin D deficiency is more commonly associated with low back pain. She can take Alsody if she feels better with it but exercises and preventive measures are much more beneficial than any medication.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
