What surgical methods treat the narrowing or widening of the ureters in a person with kidney stones?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had 0.039 inch and 0.078 inch stones in my left and right kidneys for the past two years. A recent CT scan reported that I have a mild distention of the ureter. Is this a narrowing or widening of my ureters? Also, how could this be treated if the stones do not pass? Will I need surgery, and if so, which are the most common surgical methods for this?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From the attached images (attachments removed to protect the patient's identity), this is widening of your ureter. We say mild distension when the ureter is slightly dilated. This has many causes, like distal obstruction due to a stone or reflux of urine. Usually, mild distension will be left alone without treatment. As your stones are less than 0.19 inch, they can be medically treated with antibiotics for three months. Most of the stones are made of calcium oxalate. We need a blood test to check serum calcium and uric acid levels.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

After three months, please do an ultrasound of the kidneys and blood test to check the albumin and uric acid levels so that we can decide on further treatment and prevention of your stones.
