Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

We have a 3-month-old puppy with no antirabies vaccine yet. However, my 7-year-old daughter has been bitten near the wrist and unsure of what we need to do. She is not in pain but please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen the clinical picture (attachment removed to protect patient identity). It is not very clear though I cannot see any wound or bleeding. It falls under category 2 and your child needs immunization antirabies along with tetanus toxoid shot. Before that, you need to wash the wrist area with soap and running water for at least five minutes. Do not cover the wound or abrasion area.

Regarding antirabies vaccination, standard is intradermal regimen 0.1 ml or 0.5 ml intramuscular (depending upon the guidelines of your country). I will let you know the schedule after you tell me which regimen is followed in your country.

The child does not require IVIG immunoglobulin shot, only a vaccine should suffice. Give syrup PCM 250 mg 5 ml sos for pain. Povidone iodine ointment for local application over abrasion.

Revert back for any further information on the schedule or any other query.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
