Is bathing after a healed eardrum perforation safe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a perforated eardrum, which is healed now, but that has caused small scarring. Will I be able to get my ear wet again?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I went through your query and understood your concern.

Many conditions, like acute and chronic otitis media and trauma, could cause perforation of the eardrum. The prognosis depends on the cause. In your case, it is a chronic infection that has spread through the eustachian tube from the tonsils or pharynx. However, there are chances of the infection and perforation occurring again. Also, the site of perforation is very important. If it is in the central part, it is considered a safe type. If it is in the attic, it is considered unsafe and may lead to complications.

Please provide me with more details about your medical history and otoscopy findings.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
