Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am having dry eyes problem since last four years due to regular eight hours computer use. There is burning also sometimes and reading puts stress on eyes. I consulted a doctor and started using Softdrops daily three to four times before computer use, and taking Retinox tablets periodically for dry eyes. I started using power glass since a year back in the right eye but left eye was normal. At that time, the right eye had a visibility problem and causing pain. It went fine for one year but since last few months the left eye started causing problem in visibility and pain. This time test confirmed that the left eye is also having power problem. I again ordered new glasses and started using it for the last 22 days. I have attached both eye test reports here. I can see better in the left eye with new glasses but still facing problem in the left eye. The left eye causes pain and discomfort if I spend more time in front of the computer or while trying to read distant letters that can be read easily by right eye. I contacted the doctor again and he says nothing more can be done about power in the left eye. He says the left eye will adjust automatically after a few days of using new glasses. He suggested using Eyedol twice daily for one month to reduce discomfort in eye. I have been using Eyedol for last 20 days along with Softdrops but it seems not that effective. The discomfort in left eye goes after using Eyedol and feels better, but returns back if I read small letters from a distance in the computer screen. These are some queries I need your help. What is the exact problem in my left eye? What does the eye test report suggest? Whether the left eye needs more power lens? Why am I still having discomfort in the left eye even after using new glasses? Is Eyedol good enough to cure this problem? Is there any other medicine or treatment for my problem? Looking forward your reply.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Your symptoms are suggestive of dry eyes (computer vision syndrome). There is no permanent cure for dryness. Power on both your eyes is negligible (attachment removed to protect patient identity). In my opinion, if there is no headache then you can avoid these glasses. You may keep using them if you feel comfortable with them but make sure they have an antiglare coating. You need a lot more things like cold compresses, antiglare glasses, restrict the use of the screen, frequent lubrication by lubricating eyedrop, breaks in between computer work, proper hydration, etc. The eyedrop is anti-inflammatory eyedrop which will not cure your problem but will decrease the inflammation that is induced by dry eyes and so you feel comfortable for a limited period. This will not cure your problem. Keep using lubricating eyedrop more frequently but also restrict screen work, blink a lot, follow 20-20-20 rule, use antiglare glasses, cold compresses. All these measures will help you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you so much for the reply. I am using anti-glare glasses since last year and this was also suggested in the eye test report. It feels a lot better after using anti-glare glasses. I am worried about pain and discomfort in my left eye. Why pain is happening only in one eye if the problem is due to dry eyes? Why left eye is not coming back to normal even after using power lens for the last 22 days? Can dry eye also cause strain in eyes while trying to read distance letters? How many days it may take to normalize pain in the left eye? How long should I use Eyedol in both eyes?

Answered by Dr. Vaibhev Mittal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Both eyes may present differently. In dry eyes, it is not necessary that both eyes feel the same. One eye may feel pain and other not. as I mentioned earlier, power glasses would not solve your issues. Power glasses may give you some clear image but it cannot decrease the discomfort or pain. Yes, dry eyes can cause pain, blurred vision, redness, burning sensation, watering, etc. It can cause blurred vision. It depends not only on medicines but also on preventive steps that I recommended. It may take a week or more probably. I personally do not recommend this eyedrop in dry eyes. I advise the person to restrict screen use and apply cold compresses. This helps a lot.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks again for the reply. I recently had blood in sputum a few times and it was suspected of pulmonary TB after CT scan. The doctor has suggested Akurit 4 and Benadon tablets for a few months. These are few more queries I have in this regard. Whether pain in left eye anyhow related to TB or TB medicines? Can I take Retinox tablets with TB medicines? I used to take Retinox earlier for a dry eye problem. How exactly cold compress should be done as suggested? Will you suggest any other medicines or eye drop to erase eye pain? How much time I can spend safely in front of the computer in this condition?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Pain is less likely to be due to TB or TB medicine. Uveitis is a condition that can cause pain in the eye but the redness is an associated feature but as your ophthalmologist has already examined you so you can be assured that it is dryness only and nothing else. Retinox is a combination of minerals and vitamins. It can be used with TB treatment. however, it may not help much in dryness. Take cold water and dip a cotton cloth in it. Squeeze it and put over your closed eyes. Try it now and feel the relief. You are already on proper treatment. No new medicine is required. Just follow precautions as discussed earlier. There is no specific time frame. It varies from person to person. Just make sure you use it for your professional work. Avoid playing games or avoid unwanted mobile use.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thanks for the reply. I have some queries about the cold eye compress process. Whether water used for cold compress be pipe water or freeze water? Can I use eye mask kept in the freezer for this purpose? How many times and how long cold compress should be done?

Answered by Dr. Vaibhev Mittal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

It has to be mildly cold. Do not freeze. You may use the eye mask kept in the freezer. You can do it four times daily. Each session may last for a minute.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a discussion earlier about pain in my left eye. The pain did not go and I consulted another doctor for eye test. The doctor said pain happening due to squint in left eye, convergence problem, etc. I have attached the test report here. I was asked to do pencil push up exercise daily, use I-Kul eyedrops along with Softdrops 4 to 5 times daily. The pain vanishes after doing pencil push up exercise and eyes feel relaxed. It feels better after putting I-Kul eyedrop. However the pain in left eye comes back while reading for long specially small letters. I often have to close left eye while reading. I even feel pain while reading newspaper or from computer screen. These are some queries in this regard. What does the attached eye test report suggest? What is the cure to eye pain due to above reasons? What is the use of I-kul and how long should I use this? How many times pencil push up exercise should be done? I was told to do 15 push ups once per day but I sometimes do more often. Is there any problem? How can I read small letters with left eye? Is there any permanent cure to this problem in left eye?

Answered by Dr. Vaibhev Mittal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The attached report suggests that you have minor power (refractive error), dryness(computer vision syndrome) and exophoria (small amount of squint) and the advised treatment include glasses, I-Kul eyedrop and exercise. The pain could be due to dryness or convergence insufficiency. For dryness keep using eyedrops, cold compresses, restrict use of mobile and laptop. For convergence insufficiency, keep doing exercise. I-Kul is for dryness and I personally prefer lubricating eyedrop like Softdrops etc. You can use I-Kul for months. Regarding pencil push up exercise, you can do it as many times as you wish. In general, once or twice daily are sufficient but make sure, your eyes must be relaxed before doing this. This must be done in the morning after sleep or in the afternoon after sleep. You will need glasses to see clear. As per the report, your near and distance vision in both eyes are perfectly normal. So, small power glasses are required. I can just comment based on the information provided to me. Your reports suggest that your vision is perfectly normal in both eyes. I hope this will help you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you so much for your reply. I have some follow up queries in the above matter. Regarding convergence insufficiency, How long does it take to cure this problem of eyes? Can this cause any major problem in future? Are there any permanent cure to this problem? Can pencil push up exercise cure both squint and convergence insufficiency? Is it possible to add more power in left eye glass? You have suggested using power glasses to read small letters in left eye. I asked this to doctor and he says existing power in glass sufficient and no scope to enhance power. Please refer to eye test report.

Answered by Dr. Vaibhev Mittal

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Convergence insufficiency will take some weeks to months for resolution depending on how consistently exercise is done. Pencil exercise helps to improve convergence and thus squint will also improve. Without proper examination, cannot comment if squint will be resolved fully. You misunderstood my comments. I never said that power glasses will help. You asked me to comment on your reports. In response to that I mentioned that your vision is perfectly okay and doctor has prescribed you glasses but their power is very minimal.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
