What is the reason for the small-sized lump inside the earlobe for the past eight weeks?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I have a small pea-sized lump inside my earlobe. It has been there for more than eight weeks. Initially, it hurt a little but now the pain had gone. However, if squeezed very hard, it hurts. I can roll the lump with my thumb and index finger. It is not visible but is palpable on both sides. Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. I saw the picture you have attached (attachment removed to protect the patient’s identity). In the circled area of the image, I do not see any visible lump as you have mentioned. There is a mild discoloration of the skin compared to the surrounding skin. A dot-like pore also appears in the center of the circled area. I think it is due to the clogging of the pores in the earlobe leading to pimples on the earlobe, and it felt like a small pea-sized lump. Do not worry. You have mentioned there is no discharge from it, and at present, there is no pain unless squeezed very hard. I would suggest the following:

1) Do not squeeze or pop it.

2) Apply a warm compress on it as it helps to open the pore.

3) Apply Salicylic acid ointment on it, which is available over-the-counter. Kindly check whether you are allergic to the ointment or not. If there is no allergic reaction, gently rub on the lump area two times a day. Apply for a week and watch for the difference in the lump hardness.

4) Get a medical opinion from the local dermatologist and confirm the diagnosis. The doctor would guide you properly about applying the ointment if the diagnosis is a pimple of the earlobe.

I hope you understand.

Thank you.
