Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My wife is having bleeding in her early days of pregnancy (two to three weeks). The gynecologist suggested waiting for a week and later to do an ultrasound. Do we need to wait?

Thanks.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Bleeding in early pregnancy can commonly be caused by implantation (baby getting attached to the uterus). It can also be due to pregnancy not growing well or tube pregnancy. If we have confirmed pregnancy, we do blood levels such as serum beta hCG (human chorionic gonadotrophin) and then scan according to the blood values. It is common practice to rescan in two to three weeks to ensure pregnancy is fine. Your wife should not exert herself physically, including avoiding intercourse until then.

I hope this information will help you.

Thanks.
