How can I manage my eczema, which is getting worse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have had eczema since childhood, but it has become worse over the past year, especially on my hands, neck, and eyelids. The itching is constant, and nothing seems to help anymore, not even the creams prescribed by my doctor.

I also get small blisters that leak fluid and form scabs. I am starting to wonder if this could be something more than just eczema, such as an allergy or contact dermatitis. I am also concerned about using steroid creams for a long time.

  1. Should I consider getting a skin test or an allergy panel?
  2. What are some safer treatment options?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Eczema and contact dermatitis can both cause symptoms such as itchy skin, blisters, scabs, redness, swelling, and dryness. However, there are some key differences between the two. Eczema is a chronic condition that often runs in families and may be associated with other allergic conditions, such as asthma or hay fever.

In contrast, contact dermatitis is usually a reaction to a specific irritant or allergen, such as soaps, chemicals, or certain plants. If symptoms are severe, interfere with sleep, or exhibit signs of infection, such as pus or increased redness, it is essential to consult a doctor.

If you are unsure whether you have eczema or contact dermatitis, or if the condition does not improve with home care, it is recommended that you seek professional medical advice. Keeping the affected skin clean and covered can help, along with using over-the-counter (OTC) or prescription medications based on the specific cause. In this case, the possible and most likely diagnosis is eczema.

I hope you are satisfied with my answer.
