Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

During the first day of my period, I came in close contact with my partner without safety measures, and the next day I took a tablet Unwanted-72. After that, for one day, my period stopped. Now, my period is continuing, and there is abdomen pain as well. Please guide me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Tablet Unwanted-72 (Levonorgestrel) is a hormonal pill, which causes hormonal imbalance in the body's naturally occurring hormones. As a result, it causes irregular bleeding, heavy bleeding, breast tenderness, vomiting, and delay periods. As you have taken the tablet on day 2 of the cycle, hormonal imbalance is magnified. It may have caused the heavy bleeding you are experiencing now. If the pain and bleeding are too much, I can suggest medication for both. Kindly revert with a more detailed history of the date of last menstrual cycle, date of intercourse, date of intake of pill, date of start of bleeding, or if the flow is heavy or only spotting or mild. With this, I can help suggest the proper medication and guide you.

Regards.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the insight,

My last two menstrual cycles were before a month and four days back. I had intercourse six days before. My bleeding started seven days ago, and I took the pill on the same day. Flow is normal. Please guide me.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

Thank you for reverting. I have gone through the history given. This continuous bleeding and pain are due to the side effects of tablet Unwanted-72. The bleeding will become customary in the subsequent few cycles. I would advise using other forms of contraception other than tablet Unwanted-72 as frequent dosages will lead to many menstrual abnormalities (may lead to permanent hormonal imbalance causing menstrual irregularities). For now, to stop bleeding, I suggest tablet Tranexamic acid with Mefenamic acid (tablet Pause MF) three times a day for three days. It should reduce the bleeding and eventually stop it and will also reduce the pain. It would be best if you took it in between food. Kindly revert if you have any doubts.

Regards.
