How to overcome my extreme fear of vomiting?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have emetophobia, and I hate falling asleep because I always think I will throw up.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

The fear of vomiting should be tackled step by step.

  • I suggest you avoid places and things you associate with vomiting.
  • Anxiety has a way of fooling you into believing that you are going to vomit when you actually feel only nauseated. You believe it even when it has never happened. But instead, if you think you will not vomit when you are anxious, you will not. So, anxiety may cause nausea but not vomiting.
  • You need to consult a psychiatrist for cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure and response prevention.
  • You should confront challenging situations like going to sleep very gradually.
