Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

During root canal treatment does air spray over CaOH filled canal cause emphysema on soft tissues of the face? How can one distinguish emphysema from flare-up?

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I appreciate your question. Emphysema of the face is directly linked to an air trap under your skin. It gives a crackling sensation because of the air pressure underneath and looks like a smooth swelling of the face. Root canal flare-ups might result in swelling but with severe pain. Visible periradicular changes start two to three days after endodontic treatment.

To my knowledge, an air trap in a medicated canal would not directly cause complications, but the major reasons are improper canal irrigation, preparation, and over-instrumentation. It is most commonly seen in the upper canines and central. Antibiotics are advised for treatment.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
