Does having an Essix retainer on the upper front teeth affect other teeth badly?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My Essix retainer only covers my front upper six teeth. It has been about eight years since I took off my braces. Does having a retainer only on those teeth affect other teeth badly?

Kindly guide.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. The retainer will not badly affect other teeth. As you have mentioned, having retainers for eight years already means all your teeth would have settled into their respective correct positions. An Essix retainer (used to maintain a previous orthodontic result) on the upper front six teeth makes sure your anterior teeth stay in place, and you have the best result after the treatment. In the long run, however, you should be aware of potential TMJ (temporomandibular joint) issues that might turn up in the future. While fabricating new retainers, you can ask the lab in charge or your clinician for molar-to-molar coverage of the retainer. If it is not fitting after your orthodontic treatment, your teeth may have moved a little and adjusted to the best possible state, which seems most stable to them. Regarding the follow-up, it will be more insightful to have your orthodontic treatment details, like the appliance, duration of the treatment, whether the treatment included the extraction of the teeth or not, and details of the retainer, to have complete knowledge regarding your case.

I hope this helps.

Feel free to reach out in case of further queries.

Thank you.
