Is it considered safe to sleep while wearing contact lenses?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My doctor suggested using lenses instead of glasses for me. I have small eyes. I am not able to remove the lenses. I feel difficult in putting it also. But the doctor suggested me to visit every week to clean the lenses. Is he right? Does sleeping with lenses are safe? Because I heard many people saying that it is not good. Wearing lenses for long hours in a dusty area is also not suggested. So please help me. It is the first time for me to wear lenses.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

From the information provided it seems that your doctor has prescribed extended wear lenses. This kind of lenses can be worn for days together. It can be removed and cleaned after a few days. You can wear it again. You have not mentioned your power prescription. Hence, I do not know whether the lenses or spectacles are better for you. There must be a reason for your doctor to prescribe lenses. If you are not comfortable with lenses, I would suggest you stick with glasses. Maintaining lenses is very important, and it requires diligence on your part. For aesthetic purposes, there are other options too to avoid wearing glasses which you can discuss with your Ophthalmologist. If you are going to a dusty area, please wear sunglasses covering your eye as they give some protection.
