What can be the reason for eye redness, swelling, mucus-like discharge, and heavy eyelids?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Last night I had a dull pain in my left eye and the left side of my head. I did not take any painkillers as the pain was mild. However, this morning when I woke up my eyelashes were stuck together with mucus-like discharge and there was a large number of eye boogers. They also looked red and swollen. The swelling has not gone down yet and neither has the redness. My eyelids are so heavy they keep drooping shut. I do not know what the problem is. Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

It would have been better if there was a picture of the affected eye, but it seems to be an allergic reaction or some infection. You can use some antibiotic eyedrops at least five to six times in a day for a day or two. If there is improvement continue the same for a week, otherwise consult an eye doctor. Thank you.
