Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My wife is in the 25th week of pregnancy, and she is not feeling the movements of the baby as she did before. The movements have come down to eight to ten times in the last 24 hours. We are very tense now. Please suggest to us what to do.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Let me start by saying that the baby is fine. First, understand that pregnancy is not a disease. What I mean is as long as you do not have any medical or obstetric illness, the baby will not have any problem. Presently, your baby is in the world's best NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). The baby keeps turning around usually to adapt to the mother's stomach space. The baby's backbone will be facing the mother's abdomen, and so the baby's legs will be towards the mother's back. Thus, even when the baby moves, it will be toward the mother's back. The size of the baby will be small, with lots of water around, so not every movement will be felt.

Only after 30 weeks do the movements of the baby need to be monitored. Until then, do not worry. If you are very concerned, you can have a scan and ask your doctor to show you the baby moving on the screen. This can help in consoling you.

I hope I have clarified your query. Do write to me if you have more queries. All the best.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

Thank you for your kind reply. Until the 25th week, the movements of the baby were felt very nicely. But, for the last 24 hours, we were not able to feel them. I was worried because one of the sites on the internet suggested there could be a problem. I am feeling better now after hearing from you. Hopefully, the baby is moving fine. Can you advise me on what to look for in case of any complications?

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As said in the earlier post, the movements of the baby have to be monitored only after the 30th week. From your reports (attachment removed to protect patient identity), it is clear that the mother has no problems with sugar, nor are there any problems with her blood pressure. When the mother experiences feelings of low sugar, I suggest she has a lot of sweets or sweet lime juices. This will immediately relieve her of the symptoms. As far as looking for any specific signs of complications, there are not any as of now.

All the best.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
