Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am 19 years old and currently using topical Minoxidil for a receding hairline. Small new hairs have grown on my temples but do not seem to be getting any thicker. I am considering starting Finasteride but am worried about shedding and potential side effects. How quickly would shedding and side effects begin if they would happen? How severe is the shedding and how long until it stops? Also, how likely am I to experience any sexual side effects? Kindly suggest.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

The side effects caused by Finasteride are temporary and not permanent. Once you stop the drug the side-effects will go off. As related to sexual health, loss of libido and erectile dysfunction are a bit rare. Finasteride 1 mg every day is the dose recommended by the Association of Dermatology and there are so many studies and research papers that say 1 mg of Finasteride does not affect the sexual part of life. It can be given to unmarried people without hesitation. If the Finasteride dose is more than 5 mg then the side effects will start in the body, otherwise, nothing will happen. The most important thing is that the effect is never permanent. It is always reversible and male hormonal levels become normal within three to four weeks. So, you can take this medicine. But, it is not a permanent solution. It can only delay the alopecia, but will not stop it forever. I hope this information will help you.

Thank you.
