Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I noticed a small mole or lump. I do not know what it is. Can someone please take a look at some of the photos? Size is around 0.5 cm or less. It did bleed because I tried to squeeze it, and also, the redness is because I scratched some of it. Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I saw the picture you have attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity). There is a small red bump, possibly due to the scratching of the bump. It could be folliculitis. Folliculitis is the inflammation or infection that can affect one or more hair follicles. Please answer the following to guide you better,

1) Since how long do you have this red bump?

2) Any pus-like material present or came out while scratching it?

3) Is it present in else part of the body?

4) Are any symptoms other than itching like pain?

5) Any history of an insect bite?

6) Any history of a similar recurrent lesion in the past?

It appears to be mild and is likely to clear in a few days with basic self-care measures. I would suggest the following:

1) Apply a warm compress. This may ease itching and help to heal.

2) Apply over-the-counter antibiotic cream like Neosporin (Bacitracin, Neomycin, and Polymyxin B).

3) Do not scratch or itch it with an infected nail or hand.

4) Wash it with antiseptic liquid and apply antibiotic cream.

5) If it is painful, you can take a tablet of Paracetamol 500 mg once to lessen the pain.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor,

There is no pus. It is not present in any part of the body. It is hardly painful. I am scared it might be melanoma. Can it be cancer? Please help.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As per the picture attached (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity), I can tell you that you are scared, but it is not cancer. It is just folliculitis. Follow the above-suggested self-help measures, and it will clear in a few days. Please clear your mind with these terms mentioned above. This disease has a very different presentation and is diagnosed histopathologically.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
