Could my foot pain and swelling be ankle sprain symptoms?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have a history of intense pain when pressure is applied to my foot. Additionally, I have previously suffered from a broken toe.

Today, a few hours ago, I had a significant fall on my ankle, resulting in noticeable soreness and a slight bruise. Walking is currently painful. I would like to know if there could be a possibility of a sprained ankle.

Please help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

Yes, based on your symptoms, it does appear to be an ankle sprain. I recommend you to take X-rays to rule out any fractures or significant damage.

In the meantime, you can follow these measures:

  1. Keep the ankle elevated as much as possible.

  2. Apply an air-cast ankle stirrup orthosis for support (you can wear shoes over it if desired).

  3. Apply ice to the affected area three times a day for two days.

You will also need to take the following medications:

  1. Tablet Ibuprofen 400 mg: Take one tablet twice daily after meals for 10 days.

  2. Tablet Rabeprazole 20 mg: Take one tablet twice daily before meals for 10 days.

  3. Tablet Shelcal 500 mg (Calcium carbonate and vitamin D3): Take one tablet twice daily before meals for 30 days.

  4. Tablet Vitamin D 60,000 IU (Cholecalciferol): Take one tablet daily for 10 days, then once a month for 11 months.

Please ensure that you are not allergic to any of these medications before taking them. If you have bronchial asthma, do not take these tablets.

If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to ask.

Thankyou.

Thank you.
