Is root canal treatment necessary for a fractured tooth?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My premolar tooth is broken, do I need root canal treatment?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

In the case of a broken tooth, first, we need to check the extent of the fracture. If you have only sensitivity then the tooth fracture may be only up to dentin so permanent filling is enough. But, if the fracture extends up to the pulp then you can have pain which means it will go for root canal treatment. We can confirm it only after seeing the X-ray.

The probable causes could be decay or trauma. The treatment plan includes an X-ray followed by restoration or root canal treatment (RCT).

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.

Investigations to be done

Investigations to be done include a dental X-ray.

Differential diagnosis

A differential diagnosis could involve a fractured tooth due to trauma or decay.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

If in case you have pain, I would suggest you use tablet Ketorolac 10 mg twice daily after food.
