I have frequent urination and tender nipples after unprotected sex. Am I pregnant?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I got my Mirena IUD a month back. I had unprotected sex with my fiance about 3 or 4 times after I got the green signal from my gynecologist that the IUD was in its proper place (after two weeks or so). I am afraid that I might be pregnant. I am experiencing constant peeing and tender nipples. I know IUDs are almost as effective as tubal ligation. I am just immensely worried that the symptoms may lead to what I think they are. I had unprotected sex the first time about 1 to 2 weeks ago. After each time, the sperm would come out or drip down my leg. I know I probably sound crazy worrying, but I would just like to hear from an expert.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

If you have got your Mirena inserted within one week of your periods, your Mirena should be working properly providing contraception. If the insertion is after the first week, then there could be chances of pregnancy. Get a pregnancy test done to rule out speculations. Increased frequency of urination could be a symptom of urinary infection, get a urine culture done. Secondly breast tenderness is quite common complaint in ladies after Mirena insertion, that will subside gradually, you may apply ice packs or warm water bag on your breasts to reduce the pain.
