Why am I urinating so many times at night?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello, Doctor,

I am experiencing a troubling issue. I find myself urinating frequently at night, approximately six to eight times. However, I have been informed that I do not have an infection.

Additionally, I have a strong odor that persists even after bathing. I am weary of taking medications that do not provide a cure. Please tell me, what steps can I take?

Kindly help.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

Passing urine six to eight times at night is not normal and is called nocturia. Since your urine tests and scans are normal and you are already on Oxybutynin, infection can be the cause. These points point more toward a bladder control issue rather than a simple infection. It can happen in conditions like an overactive bladder, where the bladder sends signals to empty even when it is not full. Your history of urinary incontinence supports this.

Other important factors can be,

  1. Fluid habits. Drinking a lot of water, tea, or caffeine in the evening can increase night urination.

  2. Conditions like high blood sugar or hormonal imbalance can cause frequent urination even when tests look normal, so if not already done, blood sugar should be checked.

Now, about the odor you mentioned. If the smell is coming from urine, it could be due to concentrated urine, certain foods, or incomplete bladder emptying. But if the smell seems to come from the body even after bathing, we need to think beyond urine. Causes can include excessive sweating, bacterial imbalance on the skin, or sometimes vaginal infections that do not always show clearly in routine tests.

Since you are tired of medicines, a few practical steps may help alongside medical care. Try reducing fluid intake after evening, especially tea, coffee, and sugary drinks. Empty your bladder before sleep and even try double voiding, which means passing urine, waiting a few minutes, then trying again. Pelvic floor exercises can help improve bladder control over time. For odor, wear loose cotton clothes, keep the area dry, and avoid harsh soaps, which can worsen the imbalance.

I hope this information helps you.

Feel free to ask further queries.

Thank you.
