Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been dealing with recurring bouts of gastroenteritis, and it is starting to worry me. I am a 50-year-old woman, and aside from some knee pain, I do not have any significant health issues. However, stomach problems have become a regular occurrence. I eat out about twice a week, but I prepare my meals by myself. Given my circumstances, what might be causing these frequent episodes, and what steps can I take to address or prevent them? I am seeking advice on lifestyle adjustments or potential triggers that could contribute to this persistent stomach discomfort. Please help.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and can understand your concern.

This appears to be sub-clinical enterocolitis which refers to the inflammation of the small intestine (enteritis) and the colon (colitis) that may be present in a person without causing significant or overt clinical symptoms, possibly triggered by consuming outside meals or reheated dishes, and sometimes by painkillers such as the ones taken for knee pain (if applicable). To address this, I suggest you avoid dining out for the next two to three weeks, steer clear of reheated meals, and abstain from alcohol if consumed. Incorporate probiotics into your diet, either through commercially available supplements or daily yogurt, which serves as a natural source of probiotics. If symptoms persist, I suggest you undergo stool tests and a complete blood profile to check for infections.

In case of any identified infection, a gut-specific antibiotic, such as the tablet Rifaximin 550 mg can be taken twice daily after breakfast and dinner for one week (provided there are no known allergies).

Consult your doctor and take the medicine. Kindly revert in case of any further queries so that I can assist you further.

Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Thank you.

Same symptoms don't mean you have the same problem. Consult a doctor now!
