Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I had a genital wart, and four sessions of cryotherapy were given. As it did not subside, the lump was tested and was found to be a lesion with spindle cells positive for desmin and SMA, which is associated with leiomyoma. Can this be due to cryotherapy? Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. Warts and leiomyomas have different origins. A wart arises from squamous epithelium, while a leiomyoma arises from a smooth muscle. Leiomyomas originate from the dartos muscle of the scrotum and the labia majora, and those derived from the erectile muscles of the nipple are classified under genital leiomyomas. So, it is unlikely for a wart to convert into a leiomyoma after cryotherapy. I hope this helps you. Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply. So it is not a wart? Kindly suggest.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. It is not a wart as the tissue of origin is entirely different. But, there is confusion in general because the term “wart” is popularly used to refer to lesions that appear on the skin that are not warts or papillomas produced by Human papillomavirus (HPV). Warts can be "common warts" or "genital warts" which are caused by HPV. I hope this helps you. Thank you.
