Is it considered normal for fetal heartbeats to appear around six weeks and be detectable at seven to eight weeks of gestation?

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I had a chemical pregnancy last month. My hCG is 17070 mIU/mL, but there is only a sac visible so far. I believe I am about five to six weeks pregnant, but the doctor is unsure. We only saw a gestational sac this week. What could this be? Please help.

Thank you.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. According to the hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) value, the pregnancy is around five to six weeks. At this stage, it might be difficult to see the sac and locate the heartbeat, and it is fine to consider it as a technical error. After two weeks, the sac and heartbeat will be clearly visible, and the exact weeks can be calculated. What is your last menstrual date? I hope you have started taking folic acid tablets and completed all the necessary investigations.

Thanks and regards.

Patient's Query

Thank you doctor for the reply,

Yes, I saw the doctor. I wanted to make sure it was normal to only see the gestational sac, so I consulted a second doctor. She has scheduled a follow-up for me this coming week. Yes, I am taking folic acid tablets. I had a chemical pregnancy last month and ovulated a few weeks back, so I must still be in the early stages.

Hello,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

I completely understand your concern, and it is normal. There is nothing to worry about. According to the ovulation date, the hCG value is in the normal range, and the doctor has seen the gestational sac. Fetal heartbeats usually appear at six weeks, and the doctor will be easily able to detect them around seven to eight weeks of gestation. So, do not get stressed; it is completely fine. You should keep yourself hydrated and aim to drink at least 0.79 gallons of water per day. Also, include more green leafy vegetables and fruits in your diet.

Hope this information helps you.

Thank you.
