Does red gums and spacing indicate gingivitis?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My gums are red, and I have spacing between my teeth. I brush twice a day, do flossing and use a mouthwash. I am concerned. Is it gingivitis?

Kindly advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern.

Gingival inflammation or gingivitis can occur due to various reasons. The most common cause is food deposits or calculus. Although we do proper brushing and flossing every day, there are certain areas on the teeth where the bristles fail to reach (below gums), leading to subgingival calculus formation and gingivitis.

Other reasons contributing to gingivitis are multiple dental fillings, crowns, long-term intake of medicines, irregular arrangement of teeth, and spacing between teeth, which attracts food deposits. A complete clinical evaluation is required to determine the cause of your gingivitis. Ultrasonic scaling and polishing procedure is done to treat gingivitis. I suggest you consult your nearby dentist for the treatment.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
