Patient's Query
Hello doctor,
I have a history of knee pain and currently taking supplements. Kindly let me know whether it is safe to take glucosamine chondroitin sulfate along with the following medications:
- Lipitor (Atorvastatin) 20 mg once a day.
- Atacand (Candesartan) 16 mg twice a day.
- Aspirin 100 mg once a day.
- Escitalopram (Cipralex) 10 mg once a day.
- Hydrochlorothiazide (Esiderex) 25 mg once a day.
- Vitamin D 1000 IU 3 times a week.
Thank you.
Hello,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
I have read your query and understand your concern.
Chondroitin glucosamine sulfate is used for the treatment of osteoarthritis and cataract. There is limited information about the interaction of chondroitin glucosamine sulfate with the above-mentioned medicines. However, caution is advised regarding potential drug interactions of chondroitin component with anticoagulant medications like Warfarin, Aspirin, and Apixaban. If chondroitin is used, then monitoring of bleeding episodes is advised to prevent side effects. As you are taking Aspirin, I would suggest you take proper guidance from your primary doctor or orthopedic doctor on whether to continue with the supplements or not without having any significant side effects.
Studies mention the benefits of the medicine as a supplement in knee OA (osteoarthritis); however, there are conflicting conclusions on the effectiveness of the supplements. The dose is also not fixed, and if there is an improvement of the symptoms, it is to be continued for an effective response. Also, different forms of glucosamine like glucosamine sulfate, glucosamine hydrochloride, and N-acetyl glucosamine are available. However, studies have been done mainly on glucosamine sulfate. I suggest you consult your physician regarding the dosage and possible drug interactions.
I hope this helps.
Thank you.
