Could you tell the recovery time for GB syndrome?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

My son is five years old. He has been suffering from Guillain Barre Syndrome (GB syndrome) for a month. Now, he is admitted to intensive therapy unit (ITU) under ventilation. Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) has already been given. Also, the second dose of IVIG is started. Could you please tell me the recovery time of this disease?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com. Your question is very genuine. The family members of every GBS (Guillain-Barre syndrome) patient do ask us this question. The issue here is realistically, and unfortunately, we do not have a definite answer. The range of improvement time frame is from a few weeks to months. The average time for complete recovery is one year. But, one thing is almost sure is that your son will recover. The biggest advantage he has is his age. For any given such neuro diseases, children tend to do well when compared to adults. In approximately a week or so, he should be off the ventilator and would be shifted to step down ICU (intensive care unit). From then on, he will be put under rehabilitation measures that should be continued for months depending on his recovery.
