Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am a 28-year-old sex worker, and I am currently in my 9th week of pregnancy, and I live with HIV. I am quite concerned about how my HIV status might impact my pregnancy and the health of my baby. Could you provide guidance on the precautions that I should take during my pregnancy? Are there specific medications or treatments that are safe for me and will not harm my baby? I want to ensure the best possible outcome for both of us and would greatly appreciate your advice.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I am here to help you get the best medical advice.

The best way is to take antiretroviral therapy (ART) regularly without missing. In order to increase the CD4 (cluster of differentiation 4) count, I suggest you take flax seeds, fruits, and dry fruits. Do not worry about the baby, as you are on medication. At the time of delivery, the medical team will take immediate steps to keep your baby healthy. You will be on a Nevirapine drip, and your baby will be on a Nevirapine drop, so your baby will be protected.

In certain countries, after birth, cord blood is tested for the HIV status of the baby which will be usually negative. Since medicines are available currently, there is no restriction on breastfeeding. I suggest you take one extra meal before going to bed because the HIV virus engulfs more food when you are asleep. This is very important. Do not worry. Everything will be fine with ART, a healthy diet, work, and proper rest.

I wish you good health.

Thank you.
