Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I am a 20-year-old male. I was on a strict low-carbohydrate diet. According to my blood test, I have low vitamin D 9 ng/mL and B12 156 pg/mL. I have TE hair fall. I went to a dermatologist she prescribed me some vitamin D 200 IU with calcium, magnesium, and zinc tablet (60000 IU once a week), biotin 5 mg, vitamin B-12, and multivitamins. She gave me Rogaine and Minoxidil, but after using them for 15 days, I told her that I did not want to use them as it did not make sense, and I was also having side effects. It has been three months and 15 days now, and still, my hair is falling at the rate of 5 to 10 per day. I had very thick hair, which I miss too much. My question is, when will I notice at least small hair on the scalp? When will the hair fall completely stop?

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have seen your query and concern.

I would like to explain about hair fall. 75 to 100 hair falls every day is very normal. So, it should be considered as hair loss only if the number of hair falls more than this. Straightening and other procedures also cause weakness of the root. Other conditions like fever, typhoid, malaria, thyroid, etc., can also cause hair fall, but these are less common. In males, most of the cases are of androgenic alopecia. It is a genetically determined disorder characterized by the gradual conversion of terminal hairs into indeterminate and finally into vellus hairs. With your condition, you are already using 5 % Minoxidil lotion 1 mL local application twice daily. With this for the initial two months, you may feel an increase in hair fall but do not discontinue it. You will find improvement after four to six months. Minoxidil is quite safe to use and has to be used continuously for resumed benefit. Other than that, you may continue it for as long as you desire medical treatment for your hair fall. Along with this, I suggest you also take vitamin supplements like tablet Xtraglo (biotin, copper, iron, selenium, zinc, L-cysteine, L-lysine, and methionine) once daily for six months or continue the same which you were using. We can review it after one month.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards.
