How to control extreme hair fall with itching and flaking in a person who is on medications for the same?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been treating my hair loss for three years with some success. It is more preventative than anything as I freaked out when I started to shed a bit. I have been using Finasteride for a year and Rogaine 2 % liquid for 2.5 years. I have never had itching, maybe a little flaking. About three months ago the flaking and itching became very intense and my hair started to shed like crazy. I thought it was just a seasonal shed that I have heard of but it still has not gotten better. I am wondering if this type of shedding is normal. Or should I switch to foam Rogaine 5 %? Do you have any advice? A shed like this has happened in the past but did not have itching and flaking and was never on the medications that I am on now. Currently, I am taking Finasteride 1 mg daily, 2 % liquid Rogaine, and using Nizoral shampoo twice a week.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Thank you for your query.

I have gone through your case. In my opinion, you are having androgenic hair loss which often runs in families and gets aggravated by stress and it is an ongoing process due to male hormones. I suggest you to follow a few instructions mentioned below.

  1. Yes, you can switch towards 5 % Rogaine. Use it two times a day.
  2. The second option is Finasteride.
  3. And the third one is a hair transplant if you want.

Kindly consult a specialist, talk to them, and take medications with their consent.

I hope this has helped you.

Thank you.
