Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have been dealing with scalp and hair issues for over a year now. I sought help from a dermatologist who examined a strand of my hair to check for any problems. She diagnosed me with a hair root infection about a year ago. Since then, I have noticed increased hair loss. Unfortunately, this has triggered an obsession where I feel compelled to count my hair every time I wash, brush, or touch it. Recently, I have been experiencing a dry scalp and itchiness and noticed small pimples in certain areas.

My hair loss has increased in the past few weeks. Although I have been under stress, this is not a new development. Today, I noticed a higher-than-average amount of hair loss. What could be causing these issues?

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern.

Hair fall of 75 to 100 hairs in a day is normal. Hair loss becomes a concern when the number exceeds this range. Your dermatologist can perform a hair-plucked test to determine the average count of anagen and telogen hairs. Stress, inadequate sleep, poor nutrition, and excessive blood loss during menstruation are attributed to generalized hair loss in females. Another common cause of hair fall in females is stress alopecia, which occurs when the hair is tightly styled, creating tension in the roots and leading to hair loss. Procedures like hair straightening can weaken the hair roots. Fever, typhoid, malaria, and thyroid disorders can also contribute to hair fall. However, they are rare. As for treatment, ensure you get sufficient sleep and maintain a healthy diet with plenty of green vegetables and fruits. Consider taking a multivitamin supplement like tablet Follihair [Biotin 10 mg, Iron 8 mg, L-cysteine 5 mg, Manganese 5 mg, Copper 2 mg, Selenium 50 mcg, L-lysine 20 mg, Zinc 25 mg, DL-methionine 40 mg, Calcium pantothenate 50 mg, Niacinamide 50 mg] or tablet Xtraglo (Biotin 10 mg, L-cysteine 100 mg, L-lysine 20 mg, L-methionine 40 mg, Methyl sulfonyl Methane 50 mg, Niacinamide 50 mg, Pantothenic acid 50 mg, Selenium 50 mcg, Zinc sulfate monohydrate 22.5 mg) for at least three months. Consult your physician and take the medicines accordingly. It would be beneficial to check your blood hemoglobin levels. If they are low, you may need to start an iron and folic acid supplements. Additionally, thyroid and diabetes tests should be conducted to rule out other potential causes.

I hope this helps. Please revert in case of further queries.

Thank you.
