Is it safe to breastfeed with hand, foot, and mouth disease?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am in my late thirties, and I am breastfeeding my baby. Unfortunately, I have been diagnosed with hand foot mouth disease. So, can I continue to breastfeed my baby? Is it safe for the baby? Should I take any precautions before breastfeeding? Will this disease gets transmitted to my child through breastfeeding? Kindly help me.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I read your query and understand your concern. The virus will not get transmitted through your breast milk. In addition, studies show that exclusive breastfeeding (only feeding breast milk) can shield your infant from getting HFMD (hand foot mouth disease) and other viral infections.

Thank you.
