Patient's Query
Hi doctor,
I have been diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease. However, I am not aware of this disease.
1. Can you please describe the causes and triggers of Hashimoto's disease?
2. What are the treatments available?
3. Any tips for preventing it from coming back or maintaining it?
4. When does someone need medication, when do they not, and why?
Thank you.
Hi,
Welcome to icliniq.com.
1. Hashimoto thyroiditis is an autoimmune disorder in which antibodies attack the thyroid tissue. Infection can precipitate it.
2. The final presentation is hypothyroidism, in which metabolic activity slows, so low heart rate and pulse can occur. As a result, a patient can suffer constipation, cold intolerance, irregular menstruation, weight gain, brittle nail, and hair loss-like symptoms.
3. The treatment includes the replacement of low thyroid hormone by giving Levothyroxine from outside. The dose is adjusted according to serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level.
4. Regular TSH estimation is indicated to check its level, and according to the TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) level, the dose of levothyroxine is adjusted.
5. The decision regarding starting levothyroxine is taken according to serum TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) estimation.
If the serum TSH level is high, then only treatment is indicated.
Thank you.
