What are the treatment options for heart block?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

My 72-year-old father recently experienced breathing problems, so we took him to the doctor. The doctor indicated that his cholesterol levels are high and advised him to start medication. After a month, he underwent angiography, and the reports showed some blockages in his arteries. He had a minor heart attack 20 years ago and has a history of hypertension. I would like to know about the treatment options. I am attaching his ECG, blood test, and angiography reports.

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

His reports (attachment removed to protect the patient's identity) certainly indicate significant blockages in the arteries. It is not possible to comment on the treatment based on the photos alone. You need to upload the final angiography report, which should detail the affected vessels and the percentage of blockages. He will most likely require either angioplasty or bypass surgery, so please follow up with the reports.

In the meantime, I suggest the following:

  1. Consult your doctor and start him on medications such as Aspirin, Clopidogrel, statins, Glyceryl trinitrate, and either Torsemide or Furosemide.
  2. An echocardiogram should be performed to assess heart function, as decreased function can lead to shortness of breath.
  3. He should maintain a healthy lifestyle by avoiding fatty, oily, and high-calorie foods, as well as smoking and alcohol.
  4. I recommend a low-salt diet, with plenty of green leafy vegetables, fruits, and fish.
  5. Regularly monitor his blood pressure; it should not be persistently higher than 140/90 mmHg.
  6. Engaging in regular exercise, such as brisk walking for at least 30 minutes a day, five days a week, will be beneficial.

I hope this information helps, and please get back to me with the report.

Thank you.
