Are ectopic beats life-threatening?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I am experiencing tachycardia and feeling missed beats, which started six months ago. I had a seven-day monitor, and I have attached my reports. There is no mention of whether I need medication or any further treatment. This seems concerning. Should I be worried?

Please advise.

Hello,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

Can you upload the report again? I did not receive the part about the narrow complex, 5 QRS, HR, etc. Do you experience any chest pain, discomfort, heaviness on exertion, or shortness of breath on exertion? These are ectopic beats or extra beats, which are usually benign and not life-threatening. They are often associated with conditions like MVP (mitral valve prolapse), caffeine, alcohol, or thyroid problems, which can aggravate them.

However, considering your age, we should rule out ischemia. You should also get a thyroid test done. It would be a good idea to have a stress test, such as a stress thallium or TMT (treadmill test). Beta-blockers like Metoprolol may be necessary to control these beats. If there is any evidence of ischemia, you can consider anti-platelet medications and statins.

I hope this helps, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.
