Is heavy bleeding normal after sexual intercourse?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

I was bleeding heavily after having sex for two to three days. There was also spotting previously in the same week during certain sexual activities. Four months back, I had birth control tablets for treating PCOD, and I stopped taking the medications two months back. Is this normal, or am I having any other health problems? I am worried, please help me.

Hi,

Welcome to iCliniq.com.

Generally, bleeding is seen during the first sexual activity. And if you had been involved in sexual intercourse continuously for three to four times without lubrication, there will be bleeding.

If you took an emergency contraceptive pill following sexual activity, there could be a chance of withdrawal bleeding. According to your age, bleeding should be due to either of these two criteria.

I hope this will be helpful.
