Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Over the last few weeks, I have had a heavy menstrual flow with heavy clots. I feel very hungry and tired during those times. It is making it very hard to lose weight as I am overweight and need to lose weight. I am 216 Ibs at 27 years with a height of 5 feet. I also want to lose because I want to have another baby. I suffered the same issue four months back. What is going on, and how can I lose weight?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I understand your concern. You need treatment if you are facing a weakness during the menstrual flow. And if you are suffering from the long heavy flow, you can have anemia. My advice is consult your specialist doctor, take to them, and take medications with their consent.

  1. Take a tablet Ponstan (Mefenamic acid) 500 mg eight hourly for three days.
  2. Take a tablet of Tranexamic acid 500 mg eight hourly for three days.
  3. If the symptoms get relieved, you can stop taking it; if not, try to take it for five days.
  4. But if symptoms persist, then take treatment for day two to day five of menstrual bleeding to reduce the heavy blood flow.
  5. Go for daily exercise, walk, swim, and do yoga to reduce weight and control the BMI (body mass index).
  6. Eat a healthy diet with less salt, sugar, oil, and spices.
  7. Consult your gynaecologist and have a daily tablet of Folic acid 5 mg for better brain development if conception occurs and iron supplements to reduce the effect of anemia.
  8. Go for a complete blood count (CBC) blood test to check anemia and thyroid function test, and a transvaginal scan.
  9. Both you and your husband should go for a complete treatment of any health issues like high blood pressure or diabetes.
  10. Both you and your husband should avoid recreational drugs as these reduce fertility and increase the chances of congenital anomalies in the fetus.

Thank you.
