Hi doctor,

I am 19 years old. How can I improve my height?

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I have read your query and understand your concern.

Growth in height is very difficult after 18 years of age. I will not say it is impossible, but it is very difficult. I recommend you to do skipping, pull-ups and basketball. I also recommend you to get a serum TSH test done (thyroid-stimulating hormone) and revert back with the reports. Kindly let me know the height of your parents and siblings.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Thank you for your reply.

My father's height is 5.7 feet.

Please help.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

As mentioned by you, your height is 68 inches and that comes to somewhere around 5.9 feet. So, you are much taller than your father. I also need your mother's height and if any sibling's, then their height too. This is because their height determines if there is any scope for your growth in height.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

The height of a person is usually 1 or 2 inches more or less than the average height of his parents. Your father's height is 5.7 feet and mother's is 5.3 feet. So, the average is 5.5 feet. While your height is 5.9 feet, which is 4 inches above your parent's average height. In my opinion, there is not much scope of gaining height. Still, it is not totally impossible.

At the maximum, you may gain 1 or 2 inch more. As advised before do skipping, pull-up and play basketball. Do not buy any products that claim to increase the height. They are harmful. I also recommend you to get a serum TSH test done and revert back with reports.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.

Hi,

Welcome back to icliniq.com.

TSH is a test done to check any thyroid problem. Thyroid problem can be a cause for not reaching optimum height. In case you had thyroid problem, then the correction of which could have resulted in you gaining some more height. Your TSH is normal (attachment removed to protect patient identity) and hence, no medications are required.

I hope this helps.

Thank you.
