What causes black spot on the toe?

This Premium Q&A, reviewed and published, features a real conversation between an iCliniq user and a physician.

Patient's Query

Hello doctor,

I have this black spot (bar shaped) that has been on my toe for a while. It may be nothing but I just wanted to get it checked.

Hi,

Welcome to icliniq.com.

I saw the photos (attachment removed to protect patient identity). It is just an old hematoma (blood clot), may be due to some blunt injury to toe like falling of hammer on your toe. Try to remember whether you had any injury there a few months ago. If it was due to injury, it will slowly fade away.

If you cannot remember or it is not due to injury, it is better to see a dermatologist. I want to tell one other thing. In that photo, the left corner of nail, the skin is eroded. Do you have itching there and scratching it? Apply some olive oil there everyday at night.
