Patient's Query

Hi doctor,

Is a 40 mm hiatal hernia classified as large? I have a milk allergy and have been put on Pantoprazole 40 mg once daily for six weeks. I also have esophagitis and gastric polyps, but no biopsies were taken. Does a 40 mm hernia need to be operated on, or can it be left? I am scared about what to do as I have PTSD related to operations. When I was 15, I had open brain surgery and heard everything that was happening. So, is 40 mm considered large? I am uncertain about surgery due to my past experiences, including back surgery at a young age. I am terrified of the complications that can arise from surgery.

Hello,

I appreciate that you have chosen icliniq.com for your medical needs.

I am here to give you the best care possible.

Generally, a hiatal hernia is classified as large if its size measures over 30 mm. Therefore, a 40 mm hiatal hernia would be considered large. However, the decision to proceed with surgery is typically based on several factors, including the severity of your symptoms, the impact on your quality of life, and the risk of complications. It is important to discuss your concerns about surgery and your past experiences with your healthcare provider. They can provide you with more information about the potential benefits and risks associated with surgery in your particular case. They may also explore alternative treatment options or lifestyle changes that could alleviate your symptoms. Additionally, if you have PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) related to previous surgeries, it is important to communicate this to your healthcare provider. They can take steps to provide you with additional support and address your anxiety surrounding the procedure. Take care and maintain open communication with your doctor.

Hope I have solved your query. I will be happy to help you further.

Thank you.
